Pomegranate Extract
Pomegranate is a shrub belonging to the Lythraceae family. The pomegranate fruit is characterized by its think rind and fleshy seed coats which are light red, juicy, and sweet with a slight tartness. Pomegranate is rich in polyphenolic compounds such as anthocyanidins, ellagic acid, flavonoids, and punicalagin. Punicalagin, in particular, is an oligomer of the ellagitannins. It is highly water-soluble, easily absorbed, and metabolized in the body into ellagic acid with high bioavailability. Owing to these properties, pomegranate extract is widely applied in beauty and skincare formulations.
