Mangosteen Extract
Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is a plant belonging to the Clusiaceae (Gluttiferae) family. It is mainly cultivated in tropical regions of Asia, such as Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, India, and the Philippines.
The fruit pulp of mangosteen contains an abundance of nutrients, including folic acid, catechin, citric acid, polysaccharides, and a diverse range of xanthones. These compounds help support the body’s defense system and exhibit beneficial physiological activities.
In 1855, a German scientist discovered a class of compounds in mangosteen and named them “xanthones,” derived from the Greek work xanthos, meaning “yellow”. Xanthones are widely distributed in natural, and over 200 types have been isolated to date. Each subtype of xanthone may have distinct physiological functions. While most plants contain only a small number of xanthone varieties, mangosteen contains over 40, making it an exceptionally nutritious fruit.
Mangosteen is often referred to as the “King of Xanthones.”
