Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, cannot be synthesized by the human body and is widely found in fresh fruits and vegetables. During the Age of Discovery in the 15th century, sailors often went for long periods without access to fresh produce. The resulting vitamin C deficiency caused symptoms such as swollen and bleeding gums, leading to scurvy and, in severe cases, death. Therefore, vitamin C is recognized as an essential nutrient.
