Ziziphi Spinosae Semen is the mature seed of the deciduous bush or small tree Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa (a member of the Rhamnaceae family). It is primarily produced in the Hebei, Shaanxi, Shansi, Shandong regions. The fruits are harvested in late autumn and early winter when ripe. Then, the fruits undergo processing including the removal of the flesh, crushing of the pyrena, extraction of the seeds, and sun-drying. The seeds can be consumed raw or stir-fried, and are crushed prior to use. It is a common ingredient in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
