Turmeric Extract
Turmeric extract is sourced from the rhizome of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), a plant belonging to the Zingiberaceae family. The edible rhizome is commonly used as a spice and is the main component of curry. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is known as Yujin. Turmeric has a recorded history of human use spanning over 4,000 years and was used for therapeutic purposes in ancient India.
The primary compounds in turmeric that provide health benefits are Bisdemethoxycurcumin, curcumin, and demethoxy curcumin, collectively known as curcuminoids. Among them, curcumin, a polyphenolic compound, is present in the highest concentration and exhibits strong antioxidant properties that support cellular health.
Curcumin is not water-soluble. After supplementation, it undergoes a complex process in the digestive tract and is rapidly metabolized, resulting in short-lived efficacy. For this reason, conventional turmeric supplements often face challenges of low absorption and poor bioavailability. Utilizing technologies such as nano-formulation or liposomal encapsulation can significantly enhance the absorption and bioavailability of curcumin, allowing for sustained release in the body to promote and maintain health.
Furthermore, research has shown that combining curcumin with piperine or oils can effectively increase absorption and bioavailability, thereby achieving benefits of supplementation.
